“Fort Jefferson is an unincorporated community and ghost town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It is located on Garden Key in the lower Florida Keys within the Dry Tortugas National Park, about 70 miles west of the island of Key West. Fort Jefferson is a massive but unfinished coastal fortress. It is the largest masonry structure in the Western Hemisphere, and is composed of over 16 million bricks.” -WP
I’ve been obsessed with Fort Jefferson for a few days now. It’s a giant civil-war era gun platform designed to defend the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico. Check out where it’s located. It’s a National Park so you can camp there ($5/night + seaplane tix), but bring your own water because the Dry Torugas are named that for a reason. Imagine pitching a tent and spending the night here.
